LED LIGHTING SOLUTIONS
The Light Emitting Diode (LED) is currently revolutionising the lighting industry. In recent years, rapid advances in technology have been made which transform the potential usage of the device from panel indication applications to a viable source of light for illumination. Although a newcomer to the lighting industry, the device is well understood by the electronics industry where it originated. Basically, the device utilises a solid state junction to produce photons (light output). Because there is no fragile filament, the device is very robust and highly suited to high shock and vibration environments such as railway rolling stock interior lighting. LED BENEFITS
1/ Ultra high reliability
- Typical LED has a life expectancy of 100,000 hours to 70% initial light output or Millions of hours to total failure.
2/ Immunity from the effects of shock and vibration
- Light output is produced by a solid state junction rather than by a hot filament or gas discharge process.
3/ Cool to touch
- A typical dichroic exceeds 70șC on the lens surface.
- A LED down light with lens operates at around 10șC rise above ambient at the lens surface.
4/ Low power consumption
- Makes the devices ideal for emergency lighting operation.
- A recent study that Excil performed for a metro vehicle illustrated that the mandatory emergency lighting levels
could be achieved for an entire vehicle consuming just 82Watts.
COLOUR OUTPUT
- LEDs are available with many different light output colours such as white, red, amber and blue.
- White LEDs are available "colour binned" from warm white (2700K), to cool white (4000K) and extending to daylight (7500K).
LED POWER RATINGS
- Excil LED down lights are generally single or triple LED based.
- Excil down lights make use of 1 watt and 3 watt LEDs.
OPTICS
Excil down lights are available with a choice of three beam angles:
- Narrow or "Spot" (± 6 degrees).
- Medium (±15 degrees).
- Wide or "flood" (± 22.5 degrees).
ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS
- An LED emitter must be driven from a current controlled source.
- A typical 1 watt LED is driven with a forward current of 325mA and develops around 3.4V at this current.
- If multiple LEDs are required, these are generally connected in series circuits so that all LEDS see the same current.
